Look: Cloudy amber with a minimal white head that settles quickly to a film up top and leaves good lacing behind
Aroma: Warm bread, caramel, earthy hop notes, alcohol, and wafts of citrusy hops
Taste: Bread, earthiness, and caramel jump out first and quickly joined by caramel-like malt and some booze. Earthy and citrus hops battle for position amongst the malt before closing with moderate bitterness and alcohol heat
Mouthfeel: Full tasting but lighter in feel than the beer style or ABV would suggest, medium to low carbonation, and dry on the finish
Overall: This is good stuff but definitely not a full-blown winner in my book. I love what these folks do but this seems just a step behind what I had hoped for and would expect from them – lighter on flavor and feel and this is thinner that what I feel a Barleywine should be. The bottle says “2019 Vintage” so seems like this is actually from last year which would change my feelings and adjust my expectations for this as I like my Barleywines fresh, rough, and raw. Good enough still for an evening sipper though
