Pours a hazed orange-amber color with spongy, stable big head.
Smells of crackery malts and leafy hops which get wrapped up by toffee and whole grain bread. Not particularly hop driven on the nose, but the flavors create a rustic impression which gets its complexity from malts and hops in equal parts.
Has a very soft mouthfeel with a lower carbonation to it, while the beer derives its freshness from bitter hops at the back end. Its pleasant balance allows the malts to play an active role, which turns out to be as important as the hops.
Tastes of roasted barley, hay and toasted rustic bread, which mingle into wet leaves, citrus pulp and a prickly kiwi sourness. Relying quite heavily on the malts, this does not produce any kind of sweetness but relies on its perfect interplay of toasty, bread and dry bitterness. Creates a dry punch during the finish, which gets soothed by toffee malts, with its earthy malt profile cutting through.
Very different from what I expected, (a 60 minute clone), this exhibits a very independent and well working approach of a long hopped beer. By building up a hop interactive malt profile, almost reminding me of a well build, overhopped Alt - which to me is beautiful, this remains interesting and unique till the last drop. It throws in enough typical IPA characteristics to remind me of what this is, but it certainly opened up new horizons on how a hoppy beer can appear.
