Pours a deep, dark amber coloration with a tiny, fizzy head that soon fades to a thin lacing around the glass. Smell is absolutely dominated by bready, caramel malt and toffee notes as well as some honey and red/dark fruit coming through. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by bready, caramel malt, toffee and notes of red berries and dark fruit: cherry, redcurrant, plum, fig, as well as a mellow honey sweetness and just a hint of grassy, herbal hops and estery yeast notes of banana and clove. Finishes with a mild sweetness and some red berries and honey lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and light carbonation.
I find this difficult to rate to style, as it's my first Wheatwine, but I did enjoy it a lot more than any Barleywine I've had so far due to a pleasant, mellow toffee/honey sweetness and very light booziness that is a lot less cloying that what I've experienced with most Barleywines so far. Also has some lovely, subtle red/dark fruit notes going for it. While some might think of this lacking character, I can really appreciate the mellow balance here.
