5th Anniversary Imperial stout with roasted coconut and cinnamon
APPEARANCE: Black pour yields a two finger, slightly looser looking, fizzy and foamy, light tan head with okay retention. Noisy bugger. Black body with medium levels of carbonation. Head fizzes down to a half wisp. Half wisp remains leaving some good lacing down the glass. A slight wisp remains but leaves no real lacing.
SMELL: Definite cinnamon and roasted, somewhat burnt malts, dark chocolate and burnt coffee beans on the nose. Bolder.
TASTE: Roasted and burnt malts up front, very roasted, some dark chocolate, cinnamon notes and light hints of vanilla up front. Roasted and burnt at the swallow with a bit of alcohol as well, moving into a bold finish of burnt malts, roasted coffee beans, dark, bitter chocolate, some cinnamon spices and some light coconut flavors linger on the palate. Some alcohol as well.
PALATE: Fuller body, thick and heavy, with medium levels of carbonation. Lots of weight. The finishing gravity is all there. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down rather smooth and finishes very sticky on the palate. A touch of heat lingers, but this is mostly big, thick and menacing.
OVERALL: Good. Lots of character here and the thick, menacing feel is like cement. The gravities on this one are off the charts, which makes it a fun and flavorful brew. On the other hand, having more than one of these every 6-8 weeks would be a challenge. Don’t necessarily need to go back, but this was still really enjoyable. Recommended.
