my first beer from these guys, first i ever heard of them, and its a monster, a weird one, and a pretty bold expression of vanilla, always odd to me to see this type of thing in cans too, even though its become more common. fun drink though, a share beer for sure, even a small can, its a lot. imperial fudge stout with bourbon soaked vanilla beans of two origins, neat. this seems neither super fresh nor super refined, but its unique in some ways that are endearing, the first being the bourbon character without the oak, it smells and tastes like decent bourbon for sure, but without the wood that usually accompanies it, it lacks the mellowness and the depth, even with all the vanilla, its good, just different. this is dark dark brown, rather viscous, not very carbonated but not still either, leggy and sweet, with less bitterness than expected from the roast in both aroma and in flavor, so it presents as sweet. the vanilla is bold in this, with the whiskey its right there right away, honey and even white florals with it, this isnt just a bruiser there is nice nuance, and the vanilla seems whole and real, highly aromatic but its plenty forward in the taste too. the malt layers bring milk chocolate, hazelnut, caramel, and tobacco, all desserty, i get the fudge aspect for sure, light smoke for balance, long long long on the palate. the proportions are a little odd here, the alcohol is really intense, and the linger is forever, some light astringency to this as well, and it made me feel like i needed to brush my teeth, but its both a cool method of introducing vanilla, and a fine expression of it, very full spectrum. this is fairly inventive and certainly a fearless type of brew, has me eager to try more from these folks, what it lacks in refinement it makes up for in robustness, and i like the intense vanilla. a small doses thing with all the sugar and booze, but clever and fun.
