The crack of the tab, and a huge puff is exhaled. Can inverted, the deep walnut contents begin to cascade. The waterfall curtain is always a pleasure to watch as it develops into a smooth, pitch black abyss. Garnet and hazelnut highlights shimmer at the base of the glass as a smooth, creamy, tan sponge rests proudly on the top. Each sip leaves a solid ring of foam from head to toe.
Dark chocolate, toast scraping, and a recently broom-swept-floor dusty aroma surface first. Digging deeper, a metallic iron/ mineral water develops, but not as intense as you classic Irish draughts.
Semi sweet chocolate is once again most dominant. The earthiness is very prevalent as well, especially on the back end. Slightly less of a brown bread influence than I was expecting, and just a smidge of that mineral quality.
A well balanced beer with a slight edge to the earthy and musty driven bitterness. It is very watery feeling and much less creamy than it's brethren, perhaps in part due to the lack of the famous (or infamous) widget, but is still very smooth and easy to drink.
Personally, the feel is what kills this one for me. If it were a bit full and creamy this would be an amazing Irish Stout. Gonna have to give it a go on draught at the source to see if it's just a canning issue. Regardless, I could get behind this beer as it is remarkably easy to drink with good flavor. Slainte!
