Pours of this from Jean at Cantillon. This is the 2011 Gueuzestraminer made Gewurtztraminer grape "must." A group of us got to try this together while at the brewery one afternoon. Thanks a lot for sharing Jean!
APPEARANCE: A hazy safety orange in color with no carbonation evident. A small white head recedes to a faint wisp and ring.
SMELL: This is probably the most challenging thing I've ever had in a glass. Dried and stale mother's milk, as well as what that mother's milk turns into when it comes out the other end. That's all I could think of as I smelt this. I looked for funk and barnyard and what we'd typically find in a gueuze, but only found slight traces under the aroma of father's burden.
TASTE: Much the same here. I simply couldn't get past the stale breast milk and its derivatives. There is certainly some more funky flavors here than the nose had lead on, so that's perhaps a touch of saving grace in this instance, but this tastes like something I should be trying to avoid. Dominated by regurgitated milk and newborn excrement. I drank enough of it to get a solid perception of the beer, but wasn't happy about it.
PALATE: Much like a gueuze here. Medium body and lower levels of carbonation. Smooth enough on the palate, goes down fine and finishes quite dry and puckering.
OVERALL: I try to be as honest as I can when reviewing. As much as I enjoy Cantillon beer, they can't all be winners. This one was just horrid and I felt bad not being able to finish it. I have the feeling that Jean was not all that pleased with it either, but I certainly appreciate him sharing the beer with us, even though it might not have turned out as he'd hoped. Thanks for letting us experience this one and decide for ourselves.
