Moderate, beige head from a bottle pour. It recedes a bit quickly but does leave behind a blanket of lace initially and many streaks and spots thereafter. The liquid is dark brown where only the brightest of lights will shine through the edge of the glass.
This beer smells like powdered cocoa with only a touch of sweetness. There's a smooth breadiness to the nose. There's no coffee nor black patent (burnt) malt smells at all.
A bit thin, even for a stout, with an elevated carbonation level. The brewer calls this a Dark Ale and I believe that is apt description. This is smooth, even creamy in flavor. There are milky chocolate (but not overly sweet) and cocoa flavors. The finish and aftertaste are an extension of these flavors making this beer easy-to-drink.

Pours a cola coffee brown black. Thin foaming that lasts. Big, dominant roast notes on the nose along with a touch of smoke? Flavor comes close to matching the aroma, but the finish doesn't hold up. A little too thin and a little too effervescent.

350 ml can of Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Dark Ale purchased and consumed near the Visitor Info. Ctr. in Kanazawa. 4
Pours clear reddish brown, near black in the glass, with a decent light tan head.
Smells like a mix of dark and medium roasted grains with some dark chocolate and a hint of molasses. The flavor follows but with mild bitterness.
Medium-full body with near medium carbonation.
Overall: recommended.
