Intensely orange color and a little hazy in appearance. Modest foam in the Ommegang chalice with a pleasantly sudsy mouthfeel. Aroma interestingly has a whiff of sourness. I would drink this one sooner rather than later, since there is so much residual sugar waiting for something to eat it.
There is some caramel taste, but mostly its an edgier flavor. Oddly sharp for the grandiose malty Bock idea. There's an appealing melon taste, but mostly it tends toward the musty and grainy. Straw and herb tea with the sweet and bitter finish. Alcohol become fairly prominent.
I'm a big fan of Doppelbocks for some reason, but this one seems to be trying too hard. A amiable oddity. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at Pizza Port Bottle Shop in Carlsbad.

On tap at Verdugo Bar in Los Angeles, CA.
Pours a murky honey brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, caramel, and fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, caramel, candied fruit, and berry flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with nice bright berry and fruit qualities all around.
Serving type: on tap.
