Cismontane's Small Beer comes from the second runnings of their coffee imperial stout Blacks Dawn, then is dry hopped and flavored with coconut. It feels odd to categorize such a beer as a stout. On to the beer:

Washed out black in color with dark brown hues. A little head retention sticks around as does a tiny bit of lace. The aroma is very tame first tiem around, as it warms it become beautiful and fragrant with mocha, coffee, coconut, and lactose together.

The first half of my glass I was wondering what I was tasting. The flavor intensity is very low throughout, though warming makes it grow. Bitter coffee grounds hit first, then as it warms, the coconut comes into play to offset the bitterness. Hints of unsweetened chocolate tempt me to scream German chocolate cake, still it remains dominated by whatever bitter coffee flavor there is. Extremely light in the mouth, on the smoother side with the carbonation controlled, very easy going down.

I'll admit I have a soft spot for "rare" styles, and any time I can find a small beer, I go for it. While "Blacks Dawn Jr." isn't going to blow your head off, it's an acceptable, low alcohol beer that grows on you.
