Bottle shared at the monthly bottle share held at Flask Fine Wines in Studio City, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy tan head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, dark fruit, red wine, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly tart cocoa, red wine, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a red wine barrel aging that works well with the base beer.

Bottle shared by RussianDragon. Thanks Dave. The beer is dark brown, near black, with a quarter inch of oily beige collar. Aromas of dark fruits, berries, chocolate, oak, red wine. Vinous and chocolaty. Medium sweetness throughout with a tannic finish. An interesting beer.

A: Pitch black with a 1/2-finger head that settles fairly quickly
S: Cocoa and roasted malt but somewhat muted
T: This grew on my as I drank it. Cocoa, roasted malt initially then the wine & oak notes come through on the slightly bitter finish
M: Medium to full-bodied, a touch sharp

500 ml bottle, this batch says 8.5% ABV on the label. Served in a Great Lakes Brewing chalice, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like red wine, dark fruit (tart and sweet cherries), roasted malt, chocolate, and wood. I think the taste is pretty much just like the aroma. It's full of vinous flavors, along with some roasted malt, chocolate and wood. But the red wine and dark fruit flavors are what this brew is all about! Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's creamy and coating with a good amount of carbonation. I liked this, it's worth a try if you've never had it before. $13.99 a bottle.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The beer pours black in color with a small tan head. Nose is roasted malt, cocoa powder, dark fruit, and oak. Quite vinous with lots of red wine aroma, light smoke, and a bit of tart berry. The red wine character is very strong on the palate. Dark, roasted malt flavor, some chocolate, charred oak, and a bit of tart red fruits/berries. Nice full body on this.

App- A very nice light black pour with very little in terms of head, but was a very good creamy consistency. No lace or cling. Pretty standard in the glass.

Smell- When you first take a whiff, its a bit light on the aromatics. Base stout with a touch or roast and cream. As it warms you get touches here and there of some pressed cherries. A little bit more oak and tannin comes in as it reaches room temp.

Taste- I must say this wasnt mind blowing on the first couple sips. As it warmed as I mentioned in the aromatics it became much smoother and creamier with a touch of fruits and barrel notes. The cherry and wine notes are very well integrated and balanced as it hits a warmer temp.

Mouth- A very integrated flavor profile remains with some stout notes, some barrel and some deep fruits. A lighter medium body with a low/medium carbonation.

Drink- Like I said above at first this didnt wow me or Gurudel. As it warmed to above cellar temp about 58-60 it became a think of beauty. It was creamy, smooth and layered. I would love another bottle.
