Mahogany color with an off-white head. Nose is surprisingly roasty for a dubbel. Some light sweetness, and just a bit of dark fruit. Not really much in the way of yeast or esters, either. The flavor is far too bitter and roasty for my liking. Minimal to moderate sweetness with just a hint of toffee and molasses. Not really any esters. Okay at best.

Sweet and full of the Belgian flavors. Dark, coppery color in the tulip. Modest foam and nice lacing along the glass. Not so carbonated on the tongue.
Medium body. Rich and raisiny with a nice bitter twang. Malty with a dry finish. Clear and not at all yeasty, but it has that rich buttery, and tart flavor with a lot of candy. Bitterness seems to be from the yeast, barely a hint of hop aromas.
The classic Belgian-style Dubbel, it is just so dark flavored and so distinctly in the style. Less complex, perhaps, than some other Dubbels, and it could have a more mouth-filling sudsiness, but that may be my American taste. On tap at Local Habit in San Diego.
