12oz can pours a virtually opaque extremely deep brown-black color with a very small of dark khaki-colored head that disappears quite quickly. Smells of dark, bittersweet chocolate, with slight roasted malt and syrupy cherry notes. The flavor is extremely richly layered with cocoa, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, dark cherries, roasted malts, charred malts, and woody notes from the bourbon barrel. There is a noticeable but balanced sweetness followed by a sour flavor and then a mild bitterness that doesn't overstay its welcome. Medium to full-bodied with very little carbonation in the mouthfeel and some alcohol flavor but no alcohol heat.
I don't often like imperial stouts, but this one was actually really nice. I definitely feel like this tastes like a black forest cake, whereas many dessert or sweets-themed stouts seem to really fall short of imitating what they are based on. The balance and presentation of the flavors here is well done, and I may consider buying again if it wasn't a limited edition anniversary beer.

Pours very dark with a tan head. Nose is all cherry. Taste is initially cherry then the ever so slight bitter hits. Would prefer there were more char to the flavor for a true imperial stout, again this is my opinion.
