From a 32oz screw-cap growler, filled at the brewery 06/04/22. So, four days ago. Served in a tulip.
Pours an attractive translucent, red-hued cider-like colour with a scant half-finger of creamy, fizzy head and a thin sheet of creamy lacing. Not much in the way of retention but, as noted, this screw-top growler’s been traveling around with me for a few days and is maybe getting a little limp.
Nose is rich and malty, more savory than sweet. The aroma of maple is strong and enticing.
Taste is malty with a moderate golden syrup sweetness and a distinct apple cider vinegar, tea-and-tobacco tannic bitterness. The maple lends a distinctive character without in any way becoming overly sweet or overbearing.
Feel is glassy-smooth with a medium-caramelly, candy-slick body and fine, prickly carbonation that makes it feel lighter and brighter relative to the style.
Overall, a totally worthy scots ale! Spot on to the style and here the maple syrup taste only enhances and doesn’t distract. This was the highlight of the several beers I enjoyed at the brewery last weekend and the one I chose to bring home with me - carting it around for four days in a twist-top growler didn’t do it any favours but it still manages to retain most of its goodness (the possible exception being that I don’t recall any apple cider vinegar notes when served fresh).
