BOTTLE: Brown glass. 33cl. Unbranded white pry-off cap. Generic label design & art. Best before: 14.12.2015.
6.9% ABV. Reviewed live as an IPA per the label.
Served cold into a pilsner glass in Helsinki, Finland, where it was purchased at an Alko. Expectations are average; this is my first beer from this brewery.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~2 inches wide. Pale khaki colour. Decent foaminess and thickness. Not as soft or full as it could be, nor is it real robust. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Retention is nice - ~4-5 minutes.
BODY: Deep copper of average vibrance. I see no yeast particulate or sediment.
It's a nice looking IPA, if typical.
AROMA: Resinous hop notes dominate, with supplementary floral hop notes. Pale malts. Maybe a bit of caramalt. Hints of tropical fruit - tangerine? Mango? There's vaue citrus. A biteen juicy. Hints of fruity esters indicate ale yeast.
Aromatic intensity is average.
No booze or off-notes manifest.
TASTE: Pleasantly tropical, with hints of mango and tangerine. Bitter citrus rind bleeds into and past the third act, leaving the drinker with an unpleasant bitter aftertaste. Floral hop notes and mild resins are in there too. The clean pale malt backbone lends some balance, but this still isn't quite dialed in. Fruity esters lend some needed complexity, but it's far from an intricate build for an IPA, and the discerning drinker will find its modest hop profile more in line with a pale ale than an IPA.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. It's sufficiently subtle in its execution, and it's well-built.
TEXTURE: I love its softness on the palate,, which lends it a comforting refreshing feel coupled with its apt smoothness and wetness. Rightly medium-bodied, with enough thickness, heft, and weight on the palate to support the flavour profile. Nothing about the texture accentuates specific notes from the flavour profile, but it's a well-executed mouthfeel for the style overall - even if there isn't quite a harmony of texture and taste. Slightly overcarbonated, and definitely coating.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, or scratchy on the palate. It's a biteen rough in the late second act, where it coarsens slightly, coaxing out the aforementioned problematic bitterness.
OVERALL: Highly drinkable, with a well-hidden ABV. This is definitely one of the better IPAs I've had from a Finnish brewery, but it can't compete with the best international offerings. Still, there's enough here to please the discerning drinker, and this makes me very curious to try more beers from this brewery. A worthwhile Finnish beer - and that's saying a lot. Definitely an IPA I'd buy again. I'm impressed.
