Very good quad! Looks like a brown on the pour. Bourbon barrel taste comes through but does not overpower. Overall taste is nice. It has an incredible smoothness to it! Can't recall a 12.5% beer that goes down this smoothly. Was impressed throughout with Benoit-Casper! If you find yourself in Richmond, this place is a must! No frills. Just great beer in a warehouse space minimal merch. Beer speaks for itself.

my first beer from these guys is a huge one, a dense malty barrel aged quad thats got a lot going on. its murky looking copper colored, dense and leggy in the glass, and without very much head on it, even though there is some carbonation. it looks a little messy, but also kind of mature, like its relaxed from being in wood a really long time. the nose has a little oxidation, which never bothers me in these styles, lots of wood, plenty of caramel and malty sweetness to it, brown sugar and maple notes, as well as a neat autumnal fruity thing, dried apple or something, cooked apple maybe, its nice, and a lot of whiskey too. one thing its missing for me in the aroma, and then in the flavor too, is any real sign of belgian yeast, it just isnt here. i need that in a quad, a spice and some esters and nuance, without it, its more of a barleywine, sweet and heavy and totally malt driven, and while the barrel does flavor this a lot, i really do miss the belgian yeast element here. if they could find a way to ramp that up in the future, this would be an awesome beer. tons of vanilla and toffee to this from the whiskey, a sweeter oak profile, and a little bitterness out of nowhere at the end which helps balance it. subtle plum and raisin, and a lot of fusel alcohol. i think this is a nice beer, but it lacks refinement and to me its more of an old ale or a barleywine than it is a belgian quad. enjoyable as a sipper though, hot as it warms. good not great.
