A black lager
ABV.: 4.8%
IBU: 24.3
SRM: 25.1
Appearance: Pours black but not as thick as you would think it might be. It had a bit of good head to begin with but quickly died down. It only took a few moments for me to grab my camera before it was basically completely gone as you can see in the photograph. Compared to other black lagers this one doesn't have the appearance youd expect. Absolutely no lacing... Zero. Dissapointing really. This beer isn't much to look at. Basically it's a darker carbonated Pepsi.
Smell: The OB's black lager has a great roasted scent that comes up from it. There is also a scent of oats in there. In all though it's very light and fairly "under-powering".
Taste: This has some good taste to it but the first thing you notice is just how light this beer is. A non seasoned beer drinker would be amazed at how black it is yet how light it tastes and feels. Hell, I'm surprised. That being said it is still a very nice tasting beer. Very unoffensive to the pallet. During the first sip my nose took in much of the oat smell but I didn't get the same taste. Instead I got a sweet and bitter espresso roast flavor. Very pleasant and light enough that I can tell that after a few of these I'd still be good to go. Attribute that to the 4.8% ABV. Also of note is the IBU's. Normally I would expect that something with 24.3 IBU's would not be very bitter at all. I know, I know. You can't always tell how bitter a beer would be from the IBU's. This one is actually quite a bit more bitter than I would have thought.
Mouthfeel: As I sip gulp more of this down there is a pronounced bitterness and acid like feel, as if I had actually been drinking espresso, in the back of my throat. Feels very light in the mouth, the bitterness that you can taste is there as a small tingling sensation on the middle of the tongue. It has been very nice to sip and gulp this beer because either way it still feels nice.
Drinkability: Despite it's poor looks this beer has a lot going for itself. Most the beers that are made and that I buy in this style are of a high alcohol content as almost to say, "How offensive can we make this beer." Oaken Barrel has done something different by making a very sessionable beer in the black lager style that can be enjoyed throughout the night... without making an ass out of yourself like last Saturday.
