Got this one at Duvel Guy in Utrecht
From a bottle into a snifter
EBC: 110
EBU: 80
Imperial Russian Stout aged in Warhead Barrels
APPEARANCE: Muddy black pour yields a 1+ finger, thicker looking, creamy light brown head with good retention. Opaque black body with no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a half wisp. A faint wisp remains leaving some splotchy lacing down the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Bold nose of wood, cookie dough, milk chocolate, vanilla, whisky and a solid dose of paint thinner.
TASTE: Boozier with some paint thinner here. Less impressive than the barleywine right away. Some wood, vanilla, cookie dough try to get through the beginning but it’s rough going. Bold finish of wood, alcohol, paint thinner and some hair spray. Not that impressive.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes mouth-coating. Some decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: After the barleywine, which was outstanding, this is a huge disappointment. Paint thinner, hair spray, and way too woody and perfume-like to be enjoyable. The look started out well and the nose even showed some promise, but it was all downhill after that. Here’s to hoping that barleywine wasn’t just a stroke of luck. Unfortunately, this is one to avoid.
