Got this one from Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a bottle into a snifter
EBC: 35
EBU: 55
Barley wine aged in Brandy Barrels
APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, off-white or cream colored head with decent retention. Deep, clear maroon red with a touch of carbonation up the middle. Head quickly recedes to a half wisp. A wispy ring remains but leaves no real lacing on the glass.
SMELL: Big nose on this one with plenty of red fruits, berries, caramel and toffee, oak, vanilla and coconut, with a bold aroma of brandy and alcohol. Quite nice.
TASTE: Flavorful up front with plenty of toffee, caramel, oak, vanilla, brandy and booze for sure. Some more barrel at the swallow with a bold and medium length finish of sweet butterscotch, milk chocolate, vanilla and coconut, oak, brandy sweetness and some booze lingering on the palate. This has plenty of layers and the brandy barrel is top notch.
PALATE: Medium body and lower levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a scratch and burn, finishing mouth-coating. Some decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is really, really good. The base barleywine is solid and the brandy barrel has lots going on, adding quite a few layers onto this one. I’ve had a few of these barrel aged brews but this is definitely one I’ve come across. Reminds me of the quality De Molen and Emelisse barreled beers of old. Here’s hoping they all turn out this well. Cheers!
