Got this one at the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a 12oz can into a snifter
EBC: 35
EBU: 55
Hops: Fuggles & Sorachi Ace
Barley wine aged on Tres Hombres Honing Rum barrels
APPEARANCE: Clear brown pour yields a 1+ finger, thicker looking, creamy, frothy off-white head with very good retention. Bistre brown body with somewhat higher levels of carbonation evident. Head fades to a thick, creamy cap coating the glass with lacing. Swirly wisp remains leaving some nice lacing down the glass as it empties. Good looking barley wine with a stellar looking cap.
SMELL: Lots of rum on this one, with dark honey, caramel, toffee, sugary candy, with notes of vanilla and milk chocolate. Rum, wood and some alcohol.
TASTE: Honey, rum, caramel sweetness and some alcohol at the swallow. Woody oak flavors as well with plenty of sugary sweetness. Big, bold and lingering finish of rum, oak, honey and caramel sweetness, notes of milk chocolate and vanilla, as well as some decent alcohol as a base. Very sweet, sugary, rum forward and candy-like.
PALATE: Fuller body with medium carbonation. Slick and creamy on the palate, goes down smooth with a bit of a bite at the swallow and finishes sticky. A bit of heat lingers. Full, smooth feel on this one.
OVERALL: This one is is definitely more enjoyable than 18.08. The color is a little lighter, and the barrel is more enjoyable. I have to say that the head looks like a million bucks as well. Quite enjoyed this boozy, sugary rum barreled barley wine and would gladly dive in again. Will grab more if there are more still available. Cheers!
