Got this one at the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a 12oz can into a snifter
EBC: 35
EBU: 55
Hops: Fuggles & Sorachi Ace
Barley wine aged on Glenn Rothes barrels
APPEARANCE: Clear, darker brown pour yields a 1+ finger, medium-thicker looking, fizzy light beige head with very good retention. Bistre brown body with somewhat higher levels of carbonation evident. Head fades to a thick, creamy cap. Splotchy wisp remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass. Good looking, dark barley wine.
SMELL: Piles of wood on this one, with some peated whisky as well. Peated aromas and earthy tones, with lots of wood and spirit. Notes of chocolate as well. Bold and alcoholic.
TASTE: Lots of wood and whisky up front. Quite spirit and barrel heavy. Some earthy tones at the swallow, then a bold and boozy finish of peated whisky, woody flavors, earthy flavors, some light chocolate notes and plenty of spirits. Boozy.
PALATE: Fuller body with medium carbonation. Slick and creamy on the palate, goes down smooth with a bit of a bite at the swallow and finishes sticky. A bit of heat lingers. Full, smooth feel on this one.
OVERALL: This is alright. I think the base barley is really well put together and engineered. The barrel, on the other hand, comes across as really woody and green. It’s as if there was a bunch of whisky left in the barrel and they put the beer in there for a couple days to just soak it up. It’s quite spirit heavy, though not sharp, so that’s a plus. Okay and tends to grow on you, but this is not as good as the 18.07, unfortunately. Cheers!

330ml can.
L: Very dark brown (almost black) with some carbonation and a ring of mocha coloured head.
S: Rich & heady, boozy, whisky fumes.
T: Dark chocolate, liquorice, rum & raisin, whisky.
F: Smooth and velvety with a lot of alcohol in the finish.
O: Incredibly boozy yet still drinkable barley wine. Whisky barrel ageing is up-front and dominates. Enjoyable but not subtle at all.
