Been really loving most of Rockingham's releases lately, and I'm super excited to dig in to one of my bottles of their brandy barrel Winter Wonderhams I picked up last week... anyway, this one I picked up at a store in Derry earlier tonight on my way back from Kelsen with some friends. Missed out on their release for this (which, if I remember right, included a movie showing at the brewery; kind of a nice touch considering the name and concept of the beer), but glad to have it about a month after it was bottled. This is a chocolate raisin porter, influenced by everyone's favorite(?) candy, Raisinets! I used to love these when I was a kid, so let's see if this brings back some of that (movie) magic for me...
Pours a beautiful deep brown/black with a superb collar of mocha head. Definitely a darker shade of foam than I anticipated, and with some great sticky lace around the edges. The surface is hazy and obscure for the most part, with wisps of off-khaki froth drifting about lazily. Very, very good looking stuff from the first pour.
Nose is equally awesome with huge cocoa powder up front followed by some deep roasty malts, charred bread crusts, baked nuts and definite dark fruit that I can definitely buy as being "raisin" in this case. A bit of earthy tobacco, leather, plum and smoke as well. Multifaceted and complex with a focus on the malt body instead of the adjuncts, Final Cut is definitely leaning towards excellence already.
On the tongue, I'm picking up a lot of roasty, acidic maltiness and strong flavors of dark fruit and tobacco, as expected. The raisin flavor comes across a bit less apparent here, though, and the roasted barley is much more intense so far. Some dusty yeast and fig come across on the mid-palate with a succinct earthy hop towards the finish, bringing some complexity to the table. I really like that this isn't too sweet or focused on being a "chocolate raisin porter" as much as it is on being a good porter with some subtle flavors that bring to mind the concept they were aiming for. It's better to slightly undershoot flavors like this and succeed subtly than overdo it and make an undrinkable mess, and they struck a very nice balance here. Not at all surprising considering Rockingham is pretty top-notch overall, but still worth noting.
Feel is light-ish medium with a good carbonation pull and a nice lingering finish of roast and slightly-chalky bitter notes that highlight some of the classic porter flavors. I really dig the nice slick and easy-drinking feel on this; very fitting for a 5.5% porter... good ol' low-ABV dark beers. This is a great success for this overlooked brewery. Trust the Pig!

Poured into a 13 oz Weyerbacher tulip glass bottled in November 2016. Pours a very attractive near completely black with a 2 inch light brown head that leaves behind plenty of webs of lace.
Smell is a little smoke, leather, chocolate, dark fruit, vanilla, and some breadyness.
Taste follows smoke, cocoa, tobacco, burnt raisin vanilla leather, and some fresh baked bread.
Mouthfeel is big for only 5.5% ABV, kind of creamy, moderate carbonation, a tad dry for sure, and drinks bigger than its ABV, but still goes down easy enough.
Overall this is a very solid porter, that is very complex and really tasty.

Bottle from a Lazy Dog.
Pours a solid dark brown with a huge bubbly frothy tan head that takes forever to recede. Big chocolate on the nose with hints of dried fruit and caramel with some faint earthy hop. Caramel brown sugar and plenty of chocolate in the flavor Light roast earth and faint dried fruit. Moderate carbonation, silky creamy bubbly mouthfeel. Really tasty drinkable porter, a bit light on raisin character. but tasty.

From the 650 ml. bottle dated November 2016. This is a one time release that was brewed to celebrate a local independent film festival. It was only available in a handful of places as well as the brewery.
Gorgeous looking Porter with its dark brown to just about black color and a lingering, foamy tan head.
This is described as a Raisin-Porter but the aroma emits more of a traditional Porter character with its dark malts, coffee like esters, and a very feint raisin note. You really have to sniff deeply.
The body is light to medium but smooth.
The taste is dark malts and maybe a slightly more raisin note than the nose suggests. It is very clean and has a mild bitterness to finish. This was a one time offering so get it before it is too late.
