Uniquely different from any beer I've tasted in quite some time. I wondered how I'd react to the impact of coconut but found my reaction a very favorable one. Definitely dominated by the coconut but the blend of the Azacca hops with the coconut worked very well. I'll definitely repurchase in the near future.

Can from the Packie
Hazy lemon yellow in color with a good sized long lasting bubbly white head. Citrus and pineapple nose adds some coconut to the flavor. Not bad for what it is.

Big Kahuna is a collaboration with From the Barrel, who are Rockingham's neighbors at the opposite end of the long, weird industrial park they both occupy. Both of these breweries are quite talented, and this is the first beer I'm reviewing that has resulted from a collaborative effort between the two. I find Rockingham incredibly underrated, and when I finally went to FTB a few months ago, I also found their beer to be fantastic. I am hoping this is really good, therefore, as it features coconut and Azacca hops. As someone who is not a big fan of Azacca, I think this might be one of the very few great uses for them. Let's see...
Pour is gorgeous! This is a decidedly hazy IPA, building up a voluminous, intense head of bone-white foam atop a golden-orange beer. Some solids are visible in the body, sure, but they're not a huge deal and are able to be ignored if you don't look at the beer too hard. Lace is superb and legs are absolutely awesome. This is a really nice looker!
First sniff is straight-up tropical with a huge coconut element back-ended by pineapple, cannabis, melon, apple, and papaya. Azacca is a great hop for something like this, and that's coming from someone who typically thinks this hop is a problem. Sure, you could throw Sabro or Cashmere in and get an approximation of coconut, but adding real toasted coconut does change and enhance a beer like this, and I can tell. This has a distinct, awesome tropical aspect that still feels bolstered by the hop additions. Greatness is possible!
The palate is also superb... I can't believe my tastebuds! Every sip of this is satisfying and awesome. Up front I get a strong vanilla cream flavor that melds with some orange marmalade and strong papaya elements toward the finish. Coconut, tannins, grainy interest that reminds me of wheat or chitted wheat (nutty and intriguing instead of plain and boring), almond, mango, and a bit of cherry or plum come out in such a casual yet satisfactory way. This is a top tier product. I am so blown away. It's actually somehow better than Smooth Beats Miami by Finback/J. Wakefield. Lower ABV but same awesome flavor with such a great follow-through and from a smaller local collaborative. I am in love. I need more!!
