One of the 'Original' beers from Big Rock celebrating their 30th birthday.
We went to the brewery for the Birthday Party weekend, and got to try the draft version. The Throwback 6 packs were flying out the door, and I believe the brewery store was sold out before the afternoon was over.
This beer pours a clear, dark brown with reddish highlights. Tan colored head, good retention and lace lines.
Smells of roasted malt, slight coffee and chocolate.
The taste has the same malt sweetness, cocoa, coffee notes. Flavor is balanced with earthy, grassy hops. A bit of smoky aftertaste.
Medium, pushing full body. Solid mouthfeel, dry finish.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 25/9/15
A dark cola with a maroon glow when held to the light, enough clarity to see the other side of the glass under the massive three finger foam that falls quickly leaving some random lace
S coco powder, cold coffee with sweet cream included, some chocolate, herbal, leafy hops, some raisin and char
T more char, heavy on the earthy notes, a little burnt brown sugar to go along with what I smell
M light for the color but the bubbles fluff it up, fairly gritty on the palate, with a fairly intense aftertaste of coffee, chocolate, and char
O A pretty solid sessionable porter with enough going on to please, nothing to be ashamed of that's for sure and a step in the right direction for Big Rock
One of the better beers I've had from these guys and in this 30th anniversary mixed pack with 1985 prices I might just have it again

330ml bottle (THAT much has changed), part of a new '1985' mixed-pack from Big Rock, celebrating their 30th anniversary by re-brewing and releasing the first 3 beers that they made back in the day, with, and this is the best part, commensurate pricing.
This beer pours a clear, dark red cola brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, generally foamy, and somewhat bubbly tan head, which leaves some splattered paint job lace around the glass as things gently subside.
It smells of gritty, crackery, and lightly roasted caramel malt, subtle dry coffee beans, ethereally sour milk, a suggestion of bittersweet powdered chocolate, and plain leafy, weedy, and damp earthy hops. The taste is bready, lightly biscuity caramel malt, dry cafe-au-lait, a bit of wet ash, hints of yeast, chalky cocoa, and a still understated earthy, leafy, and dead grassy hop bitterness.
The bubbles are adequate in their supportive and mouth-tingling frothiness, the body a sturdy middleweight for the style, but a bit astringent on the front palate to be considered all that smooth. It finishes mostly dry, the malt maintaining its smoky stance, while the coffee and chocolate clumsily fall out of contention.
Well, I was around 10 years old in 1985, and had no idea of Big Rock's existence (other than the fact that I went to Big Rock Elementary School, and lived about 10 miles from the eponymous glacial erratic), but beer - of course not. Anyways, I soon found out, and it quickly removed me from the Molson Canadian-fueled bad memories of my very limited underaged drinking experiences - and because of stuff like that, this is a pretty cool deal, at least as far as marketing stunts go.
