20oz pint in South Edmonton Common. Canadian pub chain Hudson's is now providing a rotational seasonal offering for their house brews, and this is the first, a summer-friendly wheat beer, with a nautical theme-appropriate moniker.
This beer appears a cloudy, medium golden yellow colour, with one fat finger of silky and puffy off-white head, which leaves some decent broad mesa profiles of lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.
It smells faintly of grainy wheat malt, soft flat citrus, and some ethereal green yeast notes. The taste is moderately sweet wheat grain, a nice orange citrus juiciness, mild white sugar, and an earthy yeast character.
The bubbles are average in their zippiness, the body on the light side of middleweight, and a bit too prickly to be considered all that smooth. It finishes just off-dry, the graininess losing much of its initial sweetness, with the fruit hovering in its muddled stasis.
An adequate hefe for a chain-pub atmosphere, it has all of the hallmarks of the style, even if they are all not at their peak. Good enough for a couple rounds during Euro 2012 match play - Forza Italia!
