BOTTLE: Acquired at a K-Market in Kuopio, Finland for 1.99 euro. 33cl bottle. Unbranded black pry-off crown cap. Fun label art.
4.70% ABV. Reviewed live as a red ale per Pyynikin's website. Expectations are above average. EBU 50. Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~2.5 inches wide. Pale khaki colour. Foamy and frothy. Nice complexion, with good thickness and fullness. Retention is great - ~7-8+ minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Opaque dark brown-black. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.
Don't look good for a red. Mainly because it ain't even red. But I'm optimistic.
AROMA: Piney and resinous hops with too much bitterness. Some mild herb. Unbalanced by any noticeable malt sweetness. There is plenty of apt amber malt character forming the malt backbone, which works well.
Suggests an amber ale with uncommonly high hopping for a Finnish beer (of any style). No booze, off-notes, or yeast character is detectable.
Aromatic intensity is mild, but above average.
TASTE: Has a nice amber malt backbone with subsidiary notes of faint peat, caramel, and darker malts. Hop profile is uncommonly aggressive for a Finnish beer of any style, as well as for a red ale, bringing heavy notes of herbal, pine, and resinous hops.
This is easily one of the most heavily hopped beers I've tried during my time living in Finland; in short, it's exactly what the Finnish market needs. Balanced in spite of its heavy hopping, with all hop bitterness well-disguised by the mild malt sweetness. Depth of flavour is above average, as is the duration and intensity of flavour. There's sufficient complexity here, but it's not pushing the envelope. Adequate subtlety.
This isn't the usual underhopped Finnish nonsense. I find none of the berry character ostensibly added to the wort during brewing, but the enjoyable hop profile is enough to make this an interesting build for an amber ale.
TEXTURE: Coating, smooth, wet, slightly overcarbonated, aptly medium-bodied, and with just enough thickness, heft, and weight on the palate to support the hop profile.
This texture is a nice companion to the taste, and its coating feel helps accentuate the piney resinous hops nicely. Very well-executed, though this mouthfeel doesn't quite elevate the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: Highly drinkable and very enjoyable, Ruby Jazz Ale is just the amber ale the Finnish market needs more of. Unapologetically hopped, with more flavour than any any red ale I've thus far tried in Finland. One of the few beers I'd recommend to friends visiting the country, and easily amongst the best currently brewed in Finland. Still, it's not world-class, and being one of the best in Finland isn't all that impressive when you look at the Finnish beer market as a whole. This isn't gestalt, but damn is it a true-to-style enjoyable brew. I'll happily revisit it if I can continue to find it for 1.99 euro a 33cl bottle.
