BOTTLE: Best by date is in this month. Brown glass. Unbranded black pry-off crown cap. Generally appealing label art depicts a monster. 33cl.
4.20% ABV. 36 EBU.
Served cold into a mason jar and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Expectations are high given that this brewery's imperial porter is the most widely regarded beer by Finnish critics.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Weak khaki colour. Thin and underwhelming for the head of a porter, with lackluster (~40 second) retention. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Opaque cola-esque brown-black with abundant carbonation bubbles (also reminiscent of cola). No yeast particulate or sediment is visible.
Overall, it's a subpar appearance for a porter, with a weak head and an unbecoming body. It should have a rich tan head with a great complexion in addition to an ink-black body, but alas, it does not.
AROMA: Dark & schwarz malts, chocolate malts, a kiss of coffee-like roast, faint sassafras/sarsaparilla, schwarzbier-esque cola notes, and mild herbal hopping.
Suggests a watery porter with a problematically shallow and inexpressive flavour profile.
No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable. Aromatic intensity is merely average.
TASTE: The herbal hop notes (especially sassafras) overwhelm the flavour profile, bringing a near-medicinal taste to the fore when it's malts - not hops - that should dominate. The yeast profile is clean, and I find it more akin to lager yeast than ale yeast, lacking the complex intangibles (like esters) that ale yeast usually brings. The roasted barley presence is sorely inadequate, as-is the malt backbone generally; I find only ho-hum schwarz malts and dark malts, with lesser suggestions of chocolate malts and faint smoke. The smoke is lovely, and I'd like to see that note in particular cranked up.
TEXTURE: Has a coffee-like acidity. The body is insufficient; this beer lacks the heft, weight, and thickness needed to lend it a full robust presence on the palate. I find it thin and weak, but luckily not watery. Carbonation is near perfect.
No astringent, oily, harsh, rough, gushed, hot, scratchy, or boozy.
This isn't a great texture for the style, but the acidity in particular is nice. I'd like a creamier fuller mouthfeel with more of a robust presence that could handle supporting bold flavours. That said, though, a big issue with the taste is its absence of the bold flavours that define the porter style.
OVERALL: Reasonably balanced but never gestalt. The absence of a harmony of texture and taste coupled with its wanting build and lack of intricate layering of flavour make this beer an unremarkable porter when compared against good international offerings, but here in Finland it's one of the better beers in the style (unfortunately). There is some potential...the coffee-like acidity, the smoke, the roast, but Pyynikin needs to go bigger and bolder if they want to run with the big dogs. More complexity is needed, as well as some subtlety and depth of flavour. This comes off plain and straightforward, never offering anything other than the notes of a basic offering in the style. Not unique or special, and not a beer that will impress the discerning drinker.
Will pair well with chocolate and/or raspberries.
