November 2016: 330 ml bottle, as Pyynikin Vahvaportteri. ABV is 7.5%. Black colour, moderate tan head. Moderately roasty aroma, hints of vanilla and chocolate, also mild coffee and woodwork. The flavour has a slight sweetness and distinct roasty notes, with coffee and dark bitter chocolate, some bittering hops, hints of liquorice, tar and wood, dry finish.

BOTTLE: 33cl. Brown glass. Unbranded black pry-off crown cap. Appealing label design. 2014 global craft beer award gold medalist (whatever that means).
7.50% ABV. EBU 38.
Served cold into a pilsner glass in Kuopio, Finland, and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Expectations are high given its reputation as one of Finland's best beers. Reviewed live as an imperial porter per the brewery's website.
HEAD: Mocha khaki head with excellent creaminess and froth. It's soft and inviting, with a superb shining complexity. Great consistency across the board. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Retention is nice - ~6 minutes.
BODY: Opaque black. No yeast can be seen.
Spot-on for a porter. Granted, the head could be darker, richer, and more expressive, and the body could do well less bubbly characteristics (which are redolent of cola), but that's nitpicking.
AROMA: Cream, chocolate malt, dark & schwarz malts, dark toast, and some rough sugars in line with treacle. I'm not finding any licorice/fennel/anise, coffee, actual chocolate/cocoa nibs, vanilla, hazelnut, etc. Sadly, there's no roasted barley presence either. But it's aptly minimally hopped and has a robust malt backbone, judging by the aroma.
Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a porter which leaves a lot to be desired in terms of complexity and depth.
TASTE: This dark brew boasts unexpected notes of smoke/smoked malt and toast in addition to the dark malts, schwarz malts, and chocolate malts that comprise its robust backbone. Roasted barley lovers need not look here; there isn't any. More minor supplementary notes of cream play into it well, but there's not much in terms of intricacy to this flavour profile, and it won't impress the discerning drinker.
Average depth of flavour, average subtlety, average flavour duration, average flavour intensity. Decently balanced. It's not a gestalt build, but I do like the beer. I just wish it offered more.
TEXTURE: Creamy - which helps quell the harshness of the smoke nicely. But this porter is oddly coarse and dry, with a rough presence on the palate. The mouthfeel doesn't seem to be tailored to the taste, and the texture is strange for a porter overall. Where's the silky velevety soft feel of the best porters?
It's full-bodied enough, with apt thickness and heft on the palate for a porter. It could use some rethinking, but it doesn't run against the grain of the beer as whole. It doesn't elevate it either...
OVERALL: Given the high praise for this beer in the Finnish blogosphere, I hoped for better. It does hide its ABV well and it's a passable porter (which is a rarity in the Finnish beer market), but it can't hold a candle to the great beers in this style - or even just the merely good ones available in neighboring Sweden. Drinkable as it is, I wouldn't get it again - both due to its high price point and underwhelming quality. I hoped for a change from the characteristically bland porters and stouts available in Finland, but this beer is just more of the same.
