Brief impressions:
BOTTLE: 33cl. Brown glass. Appealing label design. Branded black & white pry-off crown cap.
Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are average given the brewery. Reviewed live as a stout per the label (and name).
A: Pale khaki colour head. Thinner than the heads of most stouts. Underwhelming overall. Leaves no lacing and disappears within ~4 minutes.
Body is a predictably opaque black, though not an ink or jet black. I see no yeast within.
An average stout appearance, with no remarkable characteristics.
Sm: Hints of roast and dark bread. It's a pretty inexpressive - or even muted - aroma overall. Dark malts, schwarz malts, chocolate malts. A bit of cream. The kiss of cocoa dust is the highlight for me personally.
Aromatic intensity is average.
T/Mf: Somewhat powdery - which is an interesting characteristic. But it lacks the signature coarseness and dryness of a great stout. The full-bodied feel on the palate is nice, but it isn't backed up by depth of flavour. Indeed, the flavour profile is quite shallow, bringing only simple notes of your usual dark malts and schwarz malts in addition to generic cream, a kiss of roast, and some minor chocolate malts. Largely inexpressive.
While fairly balanced, this unintriguing beer lacks much intricacy or subtlety in its execution, and seems uninspired. If they'd play up the roasted barley and bring in a dry but creamy texture to coax it out, that'd be a good start. Let alone adding notes of coffee, toast, etc.
Slight overcarbonation and more of a porter-like texture than a stout texture are the main issues with the mouthfeel. But there's nothing egregious; it's not oily or astringent or anything.
O: A forgettable attempt at a stout with no stand-out characteristics and some blunders in terms of adherence to the style. I wouldn't buy it again, but I'd happily drink another if it were on-hand. Not this brewery's strongest work, but drinkable and enjoyable. I'm glad I tried it.
