A rich and complex Russian Imperial Stout aged in Bourbon barrels. Classic notes of bourbon, coffee, and chocolate are complimented by an elevated sweetness achieved by the barrel aging process.

Poured stout black with a short light brown head which left sparse lacing.
The taste is coffee and cacao, some leather and dark fruits. A hint of the bourbon which almost presents as vanilla.
The feel is light, very low viscosity, a bit thinner than expected but not off putting at all.
OA, I enjoyed it. An adjunct and additive free BA Imperial Stout? Gotta get them when and where you can.

Anastasia from Brew Detroit. 12 fl oz can. Received from @Whyteboar in Barleywine and Stout BIF #2. Received 22/02/25, reviewed 27/02/25 (Review 3456). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “12/10/24.” Stored at 39 degrees F at home. Served at 56.3 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 60.0 degrees F.
Appearance – 4
First pour – Deep Brown (SRM 30), nearly opaque.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, red at the bottom edge, olive at the top edge.
Head: Large (Six cm, aggressive center pour), chamoisee. Medium density. Short retention, leaving a 0.4 – 0.6 cm crown and a medium-sized island.
Lacing – None
Aroma – 4.25 – Moderate coffee and bitter chocolate. No hops, no yeast, no ethanol (11.5% ABV, as marked on label), no bourbon, no barrel. No disulfide or diacetyl.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins with both chocolate and coffee, very slightly bitter. Some sweet dried (dark) fruit appears, seems to be mostly raisins and apricot(?) as the chocolate and coffee fade. No yeast, no hops, no ethanol. No disulfides, no diacetyl. Noticeable gastric warming, unremarkable for the ABV. It ends a bit dry.
Palate – 4 – Full; creamy; soft carbonation.
Style: Follows the loose style guidelines as condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 4.5 Flavors are mulled and muted after the initial taste, allowing the fruitiness to come through. The bourbon barrel never put in an appearance; I suspect it’s acting behind the curtain. Gastric warming becomes quite comfortable. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts – excellent RIS!
