Firkin at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ.
Pitch black and opaque with a 1.5 finger, frothy beige head that has very good retention, only slowly settling into a lasting ring. Some spotty lacing left behind.
Subtle roasted malt aroma with dark chocolate, lactic cream, oatmeal, toast and subtle burnt coffee. Was expecting more coffee/roast to be honest but it was really tame in the nose. Just a subtle roast character with sweeter malt notes after it warms up a bit.
On the fuller end of medium body with a creamy texture and a nice robust coffee flavor that's nicely integrated into the dark malt flavors of the base beer. Strong coffee bean flavor along with dark chocolate and oatmeal followed by lactic cream and sweet, silky chocolate notes rounding things out. After it warms, it opens up a bit and I'm picking up some licorice and faint dark fruit. Not much heat with only slight boozy sweetness in the finish. Easy to drink. Overall, this beer has decent coffee flavor but it's a bit tame for my liking and it doesn't really change the flavor profile of the regular version all that much.
