A blend of Imperial Pumpkin with Insanity BBL Barleywine. I got a growler of this offering at the Weyerbacher brewery.
Pours a brownish copper with some ruby edges for good measure. There is only a thin film of head. The pumpkin and spice comes forward in the nose; the smell gives no indication that half of this came from a barrel. The pumpkin flavors blend very well with the barleywine maltiness. There is a really nice essence of vanilla on the finish.
Very nicely blended - I may not ever be able to drink the Imperial Pumpkin again without first blending it with Insanity.
Update Halloween 2017: Since I enjoyed the blend of Imperial Pumpkin with Insanity so much, I decided to try blending a 2017 Imperial Pumpkin Ale with a bottle of Cinnsanity that has been sitting in my cellar for about six months. The beers blended together well but I noticed an overage of cinnamon flavor, which is consistent with my sense of the Cinnsanity as a stand alone beer. I will be cellaring at least one bottle of the 2017 Imperial Pumpkin and I will try this pairing again next Halloween - this time the Cinnsanity will be about 18 months old; perhaps the cinnamon will have faded enough by then to not be so obtrusive.
