Double IPA #3 is a 9% ABV Black IPA made with the classic āCā hops (Cascade, Centennial and Columbus) with lots of Amarillo in the dry hop. English barley malts and midnight wheat create a velvety smooth base on which these hops shine.

Pours solid black with a strong, thick head. Aroma is chocolate, licorice. Tastes similar to aroma...adding caramel notes. Feel is wonderful and leaves a nice coating / aftertaste. Overall a well balanced a full beverage experience.

New Weyerbacher Beer Sunday (Week 626) continues at Chez Woody! We have achieved the kick-off of New Beer Sunday (Week 626) & I am using the occasion to kick-off my long-awaited & much-needed horizontal of Weyerbacher B.C. beers. I have a LOT of their beers in my Bottle Backlog and it may take several days until they are depleted. Enjoy the ride!
From the bottle: "Black Double IPA"; "Centennial, Cascade, Columbus & Amarillo Hops".
I was slowed down by the lack of an approved pic, but I took one & submitted it, paving the way for me to Pop! the cap & conduct the review. I gave it a heavy-handed pour & sat back to watch as it performed a pseudo-cascade which formed two-plus fingers of dense, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown with annoyingly good retention. Annoying since I wanted to get started, but the beer had other ideas. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose was promising with a pine-like hoppy mintiness to accompany the dark chocolate roastiness of the malt(s). It put me in mind of a liquefied Peppermint Patty, but I have experienced this (& been let down) in the past, so I was reserved in my excitement & judgement. Mouthfeel was big, full & creamy - a real, pleasant surprise! The taste was heavy on black licorice & anise with a light underpinning of piney mint hoppiness. It was appropriate for the style, but it just was not doing anything for me other than leaving me cold. Finish was dry with a very burnt charcoal aftertaste. I understand the style, but it just is not for me. YMMV.

12oz bottle poured into a Brew Gentlemen tulip glass:
Look: Pours a nice black color with about an inch of head. Lacing is present with good retention.
Smell: Nice notes of citrus, roast, smokiness, and some pine!
Taste: Taste follows the nose for me. Getting citrus very present up front that then fades into dark roasted malts and some smokiness.
Feel: Medium bodied.
Overall: Very solid black IPA offering! This is a notch below the best of the bunch such as Fat Head's Midnight Moonlight and Lagunitas Night Time but this is still very solid. I would pick this up again if brewed in the future.
