Had this beer on tap at the Cloverleaf Tavern in West Caldwell.

A: Pours a dark brown body with a small, off-white head with pretty nice retention and lacing until the finish.

S: A fairly earthy smell overall. There were some subtle citrus notes as well.

T: A pretty earthy tasting beer with a strong, grapefruit rind aftertaste as well. Very subtle, sweet caramel malt taste that was decent in balancing the overall beer.

M: A medium mouthfeel; fairly smooth and nice on the palette.

D: A nice mouthfeel and taste combination makes a very drinkable beer. Hops are slightly stronger than the malt base, but overall a pretty balanced IPA that is pretty indicative of the style.

 

 

Pours a dark red tinted charcoal color with cap if dense khaki colored head, good retention and lacing. Scent is big on grapefruity hops with a blast of pine resin, some roasted and charred grain provide the lead into the malt backbone with a touch of caramel sweetness. Taste is fantastic and obviously the best of the 3 IPA project beers. Strong citrusy and piney hops and solid light roast and light sweet caramel malt backbone. A Double Simcoe IPA like hop profile with a malt backbone not as roasty as other Black IPAs and as solidly malty as imperial amber ales. Fuller side of medium bodied, smooth, crisp and creamy with a dry finish. Quite a surprise and one I would greatly like to see as part of their regular strong IPA lineup.

This is the first of the Hop Projects I've had. I wanted to try the earlier ones but I never got around to it. This one poured out with a nice dark brown color with a tan colored head on it. The head didn't leave much lacing. The smell of the beer had a nice roasted aroma along with a hefty amount of citrusy hops. The taste of caramel and citrus run wild on the tongue with each sip. The mouthfeel is lighter than I thought it'd be judging the color of the beer. Overall it's not the greatest IPA in the world but it was still pretty good.

Had today at Capone's just because I love the american black ales.

Pours brown with a half inch head. Nice lacing down the glass.

Smell is roast and caramel with citrus, pine and earthy hops.

Opens with the roast, no bitterness from it, but moves into the hop character. More of a pine hop character rather than the citrus I prefer in this style. Not very resiny which is fine too.

Mouthfeel is moderate and a good amount of carbonation.

Overall, its good. First experience with the Hop Project, just wish it was more citrus rather than pine.
