Reviewed from notes taken March 2015 (shortly after Last Stand opened).
Served on-draught.
6.3% ABV. 30 IBU.
HEAD: 1 finger's worth of head height. Khaki colour. Nice creaminess. Could be thicker and fuller. Soft-looking. Retention is nice - about 3 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Opaque solid black. No yeast/lees are visible within.
Looks typical of an American porter. Has no standout characteristics, but is generally appealing.
AROMA: Chocolate malt, cream, dark malts. I'm not finding any roasted barley.
Aromatic intensity is below average. Suggests a balanced but basic no-frills porter.
I detect no overt yeast notes, off-notes, or alcohol.
TASTE: It's a balanced basic melange of chocolate malt, creaminess, dark malt sweetness, faint roast, and a hint of nutty flavour. Very straightforward, with fairly shallow depth of flavour and average flavour duration. Simple as they come, lacking any intricacy whatsoever.
Tastes like a great homebrew, and is on par with what one would expect from a new brewery. There's obviously some dialing in to be done.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, overcarbonated, unrefreshing, medium-bodied. Not creamy or full-bodied enough. Could be softer.
Complements the taste well, but fails to elevate the beer as a whole or accentuate specific flavours.
OVERALL: A drinkable no-frills porter that will satisfy but won't impress. I might try it again if Last Stand starts distributing. Not worth seeking out, buy enjoyable.
