Having visited this pub for many times since last November (2006), I have to say this really is the kind of real ale gem Sheffield should be proud of. It used to be associated with Edale Brewery, but the bond broke around one year ago, and now this is a brewpub with its own beers under two brands, "Crown Brewery" and "Wellington Brewery". Somehow these two names refer to this only one downstairs mini-brewery... a marketing strategy perhaps?

Located quite close to the "Langsett Road stop" of Super Tram, it's easily a must-visit stop for a real ale pub-crawl in the "Golden Mile" of Sheffield. The small bar features a wide-ranging local/regional brews on 8 handpumps and 3 foreign beers on tap (with Erdinger Weiss and Lindboom Pils as regulars), in addition to a small but smart selection of bottled gems. Alas, the brewery's own bottled beers have been discontinued for some time now, with some relics for display only. As far as my several visits are concerned, the beers (both guest and house brews) are always on form, well looked after and brilliantly dispensed by those cheerful and informative staff. On my last visit I tasted two house beers: Crown HPA and Wellington Stannington Gold; both were o.k. in quality but definitely on form. What makes this place a real-ale-fan magnet is, nonetheless, its enthusiasm for matching great quality ales with fine dining experience (at very reasonable price), thus one might luckily bump into the occasional mini-beerfests. here.

In terms of interior, well, this place doesn't rate too high in my book for a traditional English pub; for the interior has largely been converted many times, hence a mixed bag for diverse styles. But the atmosphere remains comfortable all the same; the converted lounge serves as the main sitting area: airy, quiet (esp. in the afternoon), with loosely-arranged wooden furnitures, while a conservatory at the rear leaves some space for the smokers.

On the balance, I think this pub provides a totally different drinking experience from other "nostalgic" ones like Cask&Cutler and Fat Cat within walking distance. So to get a taste of all kinds of good pubs across the board, this place is an indispensable piece to complete the jigsaw of any Golden Mile Real Ale Walk~~ Highly recommended!

A short walk uphill from the Cask & Cutler, or if you stay on the SuperTram a little bit longer, you will end up at one of the newest BeerBars in Sheffield.

Actually that is a bit of a misnomer, as the Hillsborough Hotel is primarily exactly what it says. The Hotel only opened in 1999, but the building was almost gutted & completely refurbished. An extensive structural & physical redecoration usually means disaster, however, this Hotel has been cleverly modernized whilst retaining an excellent Victorian character. In fact many of the original fittings were retained & replaced after the refurbishment.

This is quite a unique establishment, as the Hotel Bar looks & feels like a Pub, but is only open to the General Public on Thursday through Sunday from 4:30pm onwards. On Thursday each week, 8 Handpulled beers are available, & they are always an ever changing range from independent breweries. Often they include favorites from Roosters, Cheriton, Durham, Oakham, Hop-Back & Ossett Breweries. As beers run out, others replace them until Sunday. Typically they will get through 15-20 different beers over the 4 days. Sunday night-time drinking here can often be highlighted by a few “special offers” to clear out the remaining stock. Beer is sometimes served by the Jug direct from the Cask as well, which is quite unique these days.

They always have a Real Cider/Perry, a good selection of Bottled Beers with such luminaries as Chimay, Liefmans Framboise, Anchor Steam, Kwak. Food is excellent and good value for money. Has a no-smoking room which is, thankfully for once, a proper separate area/room.

If it is summer you will be drawn to the outside drinking area at the back of the bar, which is on the roof and offers some nice views of Sheffield & of the nearby Dry Ski Slopes. A fine way to spend a Summers afternoon I can tell you. A Conservatory has recently been added.

It now brews small batches of its own beer from the basement located Crown Brewery; its beers are normally on Sale here. Visit the Website for details of the Beers currently available. Its first beer, often re-brewed and on Sale, is called Loxley Gold & is an exceptional beer.

A very impressive, beautifully refurbished Victorian Hotel that sells an excellent range of Real Ale in top form, as well as good food. The bar staff are well trained, incredibly knowledgeable about the beers on sale, & are genuinely helpful.

*Highly Recommended*

Closest SuperTram Station is Langestt/Primrose View.
