Dark creamy cask conditioned pour under a tan foamy head coating.

Dark coffee maltiness emphasizes the nose. Even a bit of espresso is pronounced.

Medium bodied creamy feel that leads to a quite drinkable, albeit cask conditioned blend of what I thought was a blend of 80% Perkuno Hammer and 20% Stout by Tom Baker but it is from Perkuno's Hammer, as later discovered.

Last swigs: Enjoyed at TDR in Exton PA on a HEAVYWEIGHT night. Nice offering. Drinkable dark stout style.

Beer is good. Happy beering.

heavyweight hits the mark again, this time with black ocean, the hammer's little brother, so to speak. it pours a dark brown to black colour with a slight tan head that looks chunky and inviting. the smell here is far more complex than the thinness that i've experienced with most other schwarzbiers: it's very earthy, chocolate and malt based. quite nice. the flavour is outstanding. all of the aromas mentioned above are present here along with a smooth sweetness throughout. what's nice about this one is that it's not as big and bold as the hammer, yet still packs a flavourful punch, and it's not as thin as your typical schwarzbier as mentioned above. a great session brew and maybe the only one you're ever gonna get from heavyweight.

I had a chance to try this one at the Grey Lodge. This poured a pitch black color and had a nice head of creamy tan foam. Roasted malts, dark coffee and a hint of sour fruits in the nose. The beer is very flavorful and well blended. There’s a caramel and fruity sweetness, along with a pleasant roasted bitterness. Solid malt body that’s just right and has a long finish of chocolate malt. Dark and mysterious. Very nice.

Served on tap at Kelly's, into a pint glass. The color is a dark black, with an average, white head. The smell is a very strong coffee roastiness. The taste is a very strong coffee roasty taste, with a very good bitterness to it, and this surely doesn't taste like a lager! Mouthfeel is average. As for drinkability, this is one that I could have all day long.

More kudos to Tom Baker for another simply amazing beer! (as if he needs any more!) I'm glad to see that he will be making more of this beer, but saddened to think that I won't be able to get my hands on it again. Still, I appreciated the chance to have this beer, and I just hope that I will have this one again.

Enough good things cannot be said about Tom Baker and the rest of his crew (mainly beer enthusiasts and homebrewers or both), but I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the OneTimeOnePlace beers that I've had the opportunity to sample and enjoy. The Black Ocean being the most recent for me, a small beer from the second runnings of an Imperial Porter. Dark caramel amber brown color fills my pint, big two finger measure worth of head forms lacing that is fine and intricate. Aroma weighs in with a big roasty creaminess that must be experienced, chocolate and mild coffee highlights with a hop presence there for the party. Taste is chalk full of flavor yet extremely balanced and oh so drinkable. Mild fruit undertones an herbal hop backbone, with creamy chocolate and a touch of coffee flavor. I'm amazed at the pure drinkability of this brew and the amount of flavors and textures leftover from the wort used to brew the Perkuno's Hammer. If it's that easy to brew Tom, please I beg of you make this one a regular and distribute it just as widely as the rest of your fine brews. Textures that make up beer, are even smooth silky carbonation, medium bodied pint of WOW. Drinkability is measured up in two areas can I drink a few of them and do I crave another after the first one is finished off. I had two effortlessly and If I was going to stay at Smokin' Joe's longer in the Burgh I would have indulged in this one for at least three or four pints.

Had this one on tap at Kelly's and want to thank my BA pals for talking me into this one.

A: Deep black in color. Scant tan head on top. No doubt as to where the schwartzbier name came from.

S: An almost stoutish coffee smell right up front with a nice sweet aroma that offsets it.

T: There's a definite coffee like bitterness there, but balanced superbly by a sweet bread crust taste. No one flavor dominates.

M: Big, full bodied character. Dry. Lingering aftertaste. Alcohol is barely noticeable (4.4 ain't all that much), really nice level of carbonation.

D&N: So sad that this is a one-time one-place beer. The alcohol isn't strong enough to get you intoxicated too quickly, and with the killer taste of this, that's a definite plus. I'm looking forward to having this one again if it ever makes it back.

This beer has a unique flavor and smoothness that's amazing. Very well-balanced smoky\roasted malty flavor, but not as strong as other schwarzbiers I've had. This beer is one of the most drinkable beers I've had, the finish is so nice I reflexively reached to get my glass filled again. And again. And again. And ... thank goodness it's only 4.4 ABV. I can't imagine this will stay a "one-shot" beer for much longer.

I would take this beer any way I could get it, I hope to see more of it soon, keg, cask, or bottle!

Sticky beige head that hung on for a little bit. Slightly toasty, dark, mysterious nose centered around of an incredibly mellow charcoal note. Not as deep or complex as The Hammer, but that’s the charm of this brew. Light by Heavyweight standards, this practically a lawnmower brew at 4.4%. It’s darn sessionable but a mighty tasty schwartz in its own right. There are enough nuances to keep each pint interesting, and believe me, if I can find this by me on tap or <gasp> in a bottle there will be quite a few pints! Cheers to Heavyweight’s one and only session beer!
