A moderate pour from a growler into a shaker pint glass produced a frothy, dense head of over two inches. As it reduces, the foam sticks in chunks to the sides of the glass. The beer is a pale amber color with about medium carbonation.
The aroma is very subtle, but there is a slight adjuncty whiff from the wheat and some lemon. The flavor is grainy and semi-sweet, with just enough bitterness to balance. The brewery serves this with an orange wedge, which I happily plucked out and ate. Otherwise, there is very little citrus character other than a fair amount of lemon in the aroma. A bit of caramel is detectable. The beer is relatively light bodied and I think it’s very popular in the tap room. I recommended it to my bar neighbor Tom, who seemed to like it. It was definitely worthy of a growler fill. Here in the growler at home, the citrus characters are more noticeable. At the tasting room, I thought it tasted very little like most wheat beers I’m used to, and more like a good amber ale. Here at home it tastes more like a wheat beer. Also noteworthy is a distinct grassy taste from some fresh tasting hops. This also adds a welcome bit of sourness to balance.
These folks are brand new and probably still learning and might be a force to reckon with in the brewing war in Butte over the breweries.
