Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance- The beer pours a dark brown nearly black color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a decent level of retention fading over time to leave a lighter level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is massive of a sweet smell of caramel and molasses. Along with these aromas comes some nice roasty smells as well as a bit of coffee and chocolate. Rounding it all out, is a nice vanilla smell that creates a very sweet and dark but inviting smell.
Taste – The taste begins much less sweet then I was anticipating, but none the less still moderately sweet. Upfront there is a nice caramel and brown sugar taste that mixes nicely with a roasted malt and toasted bready taste. As the taste moves on some vanilla begins to come to the tongue. While light upfront, the vanilla brings it up more toward the end of the taste. All the while, the roastiness gets even stronger and with a bit of coffee and a hint of cocoa that come at the end, a rather balanced vanilla laden porter taste is left on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the thinner side for a porter of 6.9 % with a carbonation level that is medium. Overall I would have liked a bit more thickness as it would have been better for accentuating the roast mixed with the moderately sweet flavors rather well.
Overall – This was a rather nice porter overall. While it smells super sweet (which is actually very pleasant), the taste does not follow, but instead gives a more balanced profile. A nice porter to try if you get the chance.
