A revelatory experience of Amarillo, Bravo, Calypso, and Meridian hops. Big grapefruit and tropical notes, firm bitterness, and a strong backbone of pale malts.

Drank on tap at Medusa Brewing Company, Hudson, MA
Served in a snifter

Terrific appearance. The cloudy, glowing orangey-amber body was topped by a tight, inch-tall cap of cream colored froth. Lots of patchy, drippy lacing along the glass.

The nose was sweeter and more yeast forward than I anticipated. Moderately hoppy. Citrusy. Honey notes were apparent. The phenolic yeasty quality reminded me of something you might find in a Belgian ale. As the beer warmed, the citrusy hops came out more. Somewhat juicy. Bit of tangerine as well.

Citrus dominated in the flavor profile. Both flesh and rind. Juicy but also fairly pithy and bitter. Slightly tangy. There was a sweet, honey-like quality as well. The beer finished with strong notes of zesty orange rind and more bitterness.

The mouthfeel was definitely the most impressive aspect of the beer. It was amazingly creamy, slick and supple. The liquid contained a super fine, zippy effervescence that frothed up beautifully on the palate.

I have been hearing great things about this fairly new Massachusetts brewery but was not super impressed with this double IPA. Though a decent effort, this West Coast-meets-East Coast-meets-Belgian ale hybrid kind of missed the mark.

Certainly is a good and interesting beer, but not one of my fav IIPA's from Medusa. Laser Cat, Phaser Marmot, etc. are much more delicious imo. OA has a Belgian character that I can't quite figure out. It dominates the overall taste for me and I'm not a huge fan of the Belgian style. It seems that in general I prefer Medusa's IPA/IPL offerings that contain Citra...

That said, Medusa is cranking out some great brews and are worth a visit or 10 if can make it out to Hudson.

As part of the flight I had today at Medusa, this DIPA was my favorite offering at the brewery's taproom. I happen to love anything grapefruit, and this baby is just packed with grapefruit goodness: grapefruit peel, grapefruit juice. The bitterness complements the juiciness so well. Delicious!

I'll call it right now and say that this beer will be joining the ranks of the Top 250 one day.
