1939 ESB from Medusa Brewing. Received on 9/4/21 from @Rub_This_BBQ in NBW BIF #13. 16 oz can stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 19/4/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH 02/04/2021”. Served at 52.5 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 55.9 degrees.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), murky and nearly opaque. Unfiltered.
Body – Amber Brown (SRM 18), murky and opaque. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.7 cm, aggressive center pour), antique white, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a five to nine mm jagged crown and a thin complete cap. Second pour produces a high density 0.8 cm head.
Lacing – Fair. Two bands of dirty white tiny to small bubbles breaking into torn curtain lacing.
Aroma – 3 – Weak fruity esters. No malt, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.75 – Woody rather than earthy, slightly bitter and estery with no perceivable hop flavor, no yeast. No alcohol (6.3 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.25 Looks like cider made with over-ripe apples and had the same estery aroma, but much weaker. The woody flavor is more like aspen than oak, cherry, or beech. Still, goes down fast and easy. One and done.
