Poured from a can into a snifter
Appearance – the beer pours a deep brown-black color with a huge foamy head of brown tinted foam. The head has an amazing level of retention, fading super slow and leaving an incredible level of heavy foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is huge of a deep roasted and toasted smell mixed with a big showing of coffee. Along with these comes notes of molasses and dark chocolate nibs, as well as some deep earthy notes mixed with a little bit of brown sugar and notes of vanilla and crème. Overall, deep roasty and inviting.
Taste – The taste begins with a deep and dark roasted and toasted flavor mixed with a subtle sweetness of caramel, vanilla, and brown sugar. Creamy notes of dark chocolate and cocoa nibs as well as a decent showing of coffee are there as well, adding to the dark dimensions of the taste. As the taste moves forward the sweetness increases a touch as more vanilla and some molasses come to the taste. Toward the end, notes of cola and some earthiness and dirt come to the tongue, leaving one with a nice dark and deep taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – the body of the brew is creamy and smooth with a lighter and fine carbonation level.
Overall – A nice smooth and dark toasted stout. A deep and dark, none sugar bomb that is reminiscent of the older school stouts.

Archaism from Medusa Brewing. Received on 9/4/21 from @Rub_This_BBQ in NBW BIF #13. 16 oz can stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 21/4/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “06/11/20”. Served at 57 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 59.5 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Brown (SRM 20), translucent.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, same except for some ruby at the edge.
Head – Average (Maximum 2.5 cm, aggressive center pour), ochre, high density, average retention, diminishing to a three mm crown and a thin complete cap, fed by heavy effervescence. Second pour produces a high density 0.3 cm head.
Lacing – Fair. Thin bands of extremely tiny bubbles with a few prominences.
Aroma – 3.5 – Very light roasted malt and possibly a hint of chocolate, barely noticeable. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins slightly sweet and slowly becomes slightly bitter with roasted malt. No hops, no esters, no yeast. No alcohol (9% ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. Gastric warming gradually occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4.25 – Full, creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.5 “Slightly, lightly, slowly”. A very gentle example of an Impy Stout, easy to consume several, before falling asleep at the keyboard and awakening to find “QWERTY” reverse-stamped on my forehead. A particularly good example of a pre-adjunct era stout – I’ll take two cases, please!
