Drunk fresh at the source in December 2024.

L: Dark ruby with garnet highlights at the edge of the glass. A thin, bubbly, mocha-coloured head sits atop the beer. No carbonation can be seen in the glass.

S: The nose is very neutral. Some dark grain and dark grape juice come through as the beer warms.

T: Thick, rich cola, coffee, smokey and roasted grains and a sweet and tangy raspberry finish. Low level bitterness kicks in on the swallow.

M: Light and smooth in the mouth, with minimal carbonation.

O: A nice porter heavy on what I perceive as cola and raspberry, but many years of reading other people's reviews makes me suspect I'm the only one who ever gets that profile...

Cheers!

$12 AUD per Schooner (425ml) at Cherry Tree Hotel, Melbourne.

Cherry cough syrup, muted chocolate malt and dark malts. Not getting any smoked malt/roast or even any bitterness at all.

Pretty abysmal effort... it's not often I try a smoked porter that isn't smokey at all even on a basic level.

Fundamentally fails to achieve any aspect of the intended style in terms of flavour, texture, and intangibles.

D- / NOT RECOMMENDED

SPOILER ALERT: I’ve drunk 3 of these already. I took a 4-pack of this on a camping trip. It’s pretty good, however I suspect I may be cutting and pasting from my review of Feral Smoked Porter: Smoked porters, they tend to be quite similar, it’s just the nature of smoked porters you see... please don’t hold it against me, unless it’s an IPA, then you may hold it against me and I may drink it (the lesson being: Never hold an IPA too close to me). Blackman’s is a nice little Torquay brewer (Torquay Victoria, Australia, not the English one), thus far I’ve had Reginald IPA and Angry Reg DIPA - they’ve been rather tasty and Arthur is no exception. So let’s have at Arthur already!

Poured from a 330ml can into a nonic pint.

A: Deep cola body, fairly opaque, with a billowy 1 centimetre tan head that sustains for the good 15 mins it takes for me to write a single sentence (I have to read from a dictionary as I write, my thing of the English something isn’t very ummm... something). Anyway, good looking Porter, stout-like in appearance. 8/10.

S: Chocolate and dark fruits with a hint of campfire, tres err, stuff [you shouldn’t try French Doc, learn English first]. Sweetness from a heady malting mingles with a touch of roasted coffee bean - it’s a smoky, chocolatey, earthy playground... someone should do something about that - maybe hire a caretaker? I’m going to drink it anyway. 7/10.

T: Upfront smoke notes, not too jarring for an old Rauch drinker like me - but noticeable to the uninitiated - you’ve been warned. The smoke in this one is less hickory and more beechwood compared to Feral’s offering, and a bit more prominent, along with a some bitterness and a hint of alcohol spirit towards the finish. Still it’s a tasty drop with its chocolate, roast coffee and cigar smoke character - I will get this again for sure. 8/10.

M: Mid to light, almost medium bodied with a fairly creamy carbonation - kicks Feral’s watery Smoked Porter right in that soft fleshy part us males avoid receiving kicks in (yes, I’m talking about our duodenums - very sensitive area there!). 7/10.

D: Solid, solid Smoked Porter, and yet another high mark for these Blackman’s chaps - they’re killing it with a solid core range here. Killing. It. Keep up the good work, and brew some more Angry Reg FFS! Can’t seem to find it anywhere in Queensland anymore (admittedly I live in Brisbane and visit like 2 bottleshops so I haven’t been extensive in my quest). 8/10.

Food match: Cigars and campfire pie... or cigars by a campfire eating pie, that one.

Appearance : dark and black, quite viscous letting no light through. Chocolate foam head dissipates.
Aroma : smokiness very present. Lots of tar and creosote aromas coming through as well as some smoked bacon overtones.
Taste : strong black coffee with astringent bitterness throughout and lingering on the finish.
Overall : rich and strong smokey black beer, good example of the style, drinkable but only one glass at a time for me because of the high bitterness. Would recommend having this with a roast and rich gravy or else if you want to balance out the bitterness, a dark chocolate that has some sugar content.
