a really cool beer here, my first one from these guys, a cabernet barrel aged dark sour at its base, this particular version is spiked with raspberries, and its awesome. i really like what the dark grains do here with the fruit, an almost chocolate dipped vibe, but its not sweet from the malt at all, more of a dry cocoa thing, not too sour either, a light fruity vinegar and red wine thing, a ton of the barrel character coming through, and for me its obviously cabernet which is cool, the grapes and the raspberries go really well together, acidic but not a lot more tang than like a cranberry or something, and with a little richness from the grain, its balanced and drinkable. i like the raspberries worked into the maltiness, its a cool and uncommon complexity. i thought this might be a little more fully wild, more bretty and mature tasting, but i like it the way it is and wouldnt change much. its not all fruit either, which some of the paler ones can be sometimes, and i appreciate the depth and balance this has. the wine barrel is a great call, and this was a fun treat, and im glad i picked it up when i was down south earlier this year. id love to try the blueberry one, and think this would be really neat with wine grapes too. the barrels are perfect in this.
