Pours black with a thin cap of white head that left little lacing. Smells and tastes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, roasted malts and some char. Light to medium bodied for the style, lightly carbonated, creamy mouth feel.

Pours darkest shades of brown, mocha cap and leaving ample fine lacing.

Dense notes of black coffee and dark chocolate on the nose.

Pour looked a little thin - more like dark translucent brown - but it was suitably pitch in the glass. Big-bubbled brown head settled quickly into a flat black mirror. Dominant cold black coffee aroma with some char, maybe a whiff of something like anise? Immediate on the sip was a massive bitterness - all roast and char of coffee - easily one of the bitterest stouts I've had in quite some time, and not with much sweetness on the back-end. When the sugars did creep in, there was something of a molasses, mild caramel-edged milk sugar taste, but the bitter coffee beer coat on my tongue reigned it in quickly. The body was thin, and the feel flat - no perceptible carbonation after the initial head settled.

Interesting - and I'm not 100% sure how I feel about it - I liked it, but I'm a black coffee guy - and even so, the bitterness was surprising - I had Half & Half, a coffee milk stout collab between Barrier and Other Half a coupla weeks ago, and it was one of the coffee-est-tasting coffee stouts I've had in a while. If that was the light-and-sweet version of coffee beer, then this is the cold black, with maybe a bit of brown sugar in it, coffee version. Despite the very mild sweetness, there was not much drying to it - it had a wet finish, like wet ash and cocoa, and the aftertaste had a linger like cigar smoke...
