a good take on the style, the bartender was a little overly stoked on it, sold it to me with great gusto and passion, almost to an extent i cant really imagine for a beer like this, a little hoppy, very estery, fuller bodied, but not really something to get so riled up about, at least not for me. thicker on the pour, classically hazy, but without the tall white lace head i look for in the style. it smells a little piney, hoppier than i am used to in the style for sure, but still with all the wheat malt right there with it and with some serious banana and pear esters from the yeast, fermented a bit warmer than most perhaps, it tastes almost phenolic and little astringent to me once i get into it, but its agreeable enough, especially with the higher hop presence to balance. some clove and pepper, even cinnamon for a second, a little acid or tannic thing too. i wish it had more carbonation, i really miss it here, this is a bit flat, especially for the style. overall a bold take on a hefe, not all the way traditional but the flavors work well, i wish it were a little more refined, but an enjoyable pint nevertheless, my first from sand city!
