Served in a 12 oz (355 ml) conical glass at the Sand City Brewery in Northport (LI), NY.
A: Pours a very dark brown, close to black, with a one finger mocha colored head, short lived retention and little or no lacing.
S: Bourbon very evident with flavors of chocolate, dark roast coffee, cinnamon, and vanilla most in evidence. I thought I detected a coconut note.
T: Sweet. Again, flavors of chocolate, dark roast coffee, cinnamon, coconut, and vanilla most in evidence. Anise, orange peel, maybe plum rind. Solid bitterness must be there, but seems to function to balance fruit, malt, and booziness nicely.
M: Full bodied with solid effervescence. Creamy and rich.
O: Wow! A celebratory brew if ever there were one.

Pours totally opaque black color with a 1-2 finger thick brown foamy head that faded on the fast side and left minimal foamy lacing.
It smells of cinnamon up front with hints of vanilla and then cocoa powder in the background. Charred wood, molasses, burnt coffee grinds, toasted malts and caramelized brown sugar rounds out the nose. Not much bourbon, but no alcohol either which was surprising for a 15% ABV brew. A really enjoyable aroma that made great use of the vanilla and cinnamon used to make this beer.
Tastes like cinnamon, bourbon, cocoa, brown sugar, dark chocolate, molasses, hints of peat moss and soy sauce, bitter bakers chocolate, fudge, earthy notes like tea leaf and twigs, burnt coffee grinds, caramel, roasted nuts, smoked malts and charred wood. It’s a total freakin malt bomb that’s not too sweet, not too roasty and definitely not boozy. For a lack of hops in the flavor it seems almost balanced because the malty aspects are very tasty and unleash a nice level of sweetness which works well with the barrel influence and roasted malts. I thought the cinnamon would ruin this but it worked well and makes for a nice unique BBA stout. Congrats Sand City!
