355ml can poured into tulip.
Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with one thin finger of off-white head that leaves Scottish lowland landscape lace as it recedes.
Smells of mild grainy malt, faint honeyed apple and herbal, grassy hops.
Tastes of crisp unsweetened breakfast cereal, honeyed orchard fruit and more pleasant grassy hops.
Feels light and creamy. Light bodied with silky carbonation. Finishes mildly dry.
Verdict: Recommended. Not exactly spectacular, but tasty and easy to drink.

A slight haze in a golden yellow body, tiny bubbles evenly distributed throughout, finger of bone white foam falls after a few sips leaving a couple random patches
S honey, sweet grains, some hard to place fruity notes, caramel apple maybe? faint grass, simple but solid
T more of the same really, honey and grains, with a hint of spice and fruit, about what I expect from the style
M light bodied, creams up, slick on the palate, dry clean finish
O not the most exciting style but its well executed and refreshing
No complaints with this one, remember your drinking a kolsch and not a big palate wrecker........

355ml can - part of a trio of initial province-wide offerings from this newly minted Alberta brewery - this is their Kölsch, part of their 'historical styles, re-imagined' branding.
This beer pours a mostly clear, bright medium golden yellow colour, with one skinny finger of weakly puffy, loosely foamy, and generally limp dirty white head, which leaves some gnarled tree branch lace around the glass as things duly drop away.
It smells of grainy and doughy pale malt, a twinge of edgy wheatiness, subtle earthy yeast, tame apple and pear fruity notes, and a nice leafy, floral, and wet hay-like hoppiness. The taste is bready and lightly toasted pale malt, spicy wheat cereal, a mixed bowl of domestic fruitiness (so, apples, oranges, and pears), a receded yeastiness, and more gentle herbal, dusty, and farmer's field hop bitters.
The bubbles are adequate in their basically supportive and structurally sound frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and more or less smooth, maybe a touch of wheat chaff strangely interfering here - I'm as surprised as anyone. It finishes off-dry, the malt doing well for itself, even though it has very little to consider in terms of any lingering challenge.
Overall, Coulee has succeeded in emulating this old-school style, but hardly re-inventing it - a nice locally-sourced maltiness (it's Alberta, duh), and plain fruity and hoppy essences, which exhibit zero off-flavours. That's a solid start, in my books.
