On tap, Winterfest 2005, St. Paul, MN...
Black and opaque, small tan head and little lacing, slightly oily sheen to the head. Relatively un-aromatic, a light sweet brown sugar sense at most. Mouthfeel starts nice and creamy, flavor has lots of chocolate notes, a dusty Mexican chocolate and nutmeg quality to it. Becomes a little more astringent later in the profile, and the carbonation seems more apparent, leading to a fade in flavor and mouthfeel. Pretty easy drinker, the start is better than the finish to my mind.

Poured from a growler.
Aroma shows a somewhat rich dark malt with a chocolate sweetness with hints of roast coffee, and a flat aroma typical of this brewery (probably the yeast).
Heavy deep black color with a one inch head that settles quickly. Dark brown head. Good lacing
Rich and smooth with fairly deep malt character. Not sharp in flavor. NIce blending of roast, chocolate and mold coffee. No fruitiness.
This may be a tad bit thin, but it more than makes up for it in a nice almost velvey smoothness. Perfectly carbonated.
Hightly drinkable. Well done.

Pitch black w/ a lighter, cola brown coloring towards the outside of the top of the beer. Smells of bitter hops and sweet milk chocolate. Taste is very sweet and chocolatey to begin with but bitter coffee flavors take over to the end. Low acidity. Mouthfeel is smooth and slick, growler had been open for 12 hours at the time of review, so carbonation is depleted, but is still a very good beer.
