Brewery tap-filled can, poured into a MacAndrew's thistle glass. Pours a dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a one finger light khaki head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt, raisins, plums and and hint of smoke. Flavor follows with dry caramel malt, raisins, dates, plums and very mild peat smoke. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. Always looking for a chance to try a new scotch ale and was glad to find both this and a barleywine at Black Label. The flavor profile is spot-on with appropriate semi-dry caramel malt and dark fruit flavors. The flavor density kind of drops off during the taste, but somehow retains a pleasant malty aftertaste. I wanted more peat, but there was a light smoky component. A mild Scotch ale, not deep enough to be a wee heavy. Satisfactory and pleasantly drinkable, but needs a bit more smokiness to be memorable.

Appearance is a dark, somewhat cloudy reddish brown. Subtle caramel and dark fruit aroma. Taste is slightly sweet with a little toffee and stone fruit.
